Election Certification
The first count of ballots is done on election day for in person ballots and 7 days later for mailed in absentee ballots. Recanvass of General Election Returns by the Board of Elections is done approximately 2 weeks later. A Verifiable Audit of Voting Systems occurs not later than the 2 week deadline. Certification and transmission of Canvass of General Election returns by the County Board of Elections is due 10 days later. The New York State Board of Canvassers meet to certify the General Election.
Currently, voting machines secure each paper ballot in the voting machine. A picture of each ballot (front and back) is taken and stored on a disc in the machine. All ballots and the discs are kept in secure storage for 2 years at the County Board of Elections. Each machine prints out a tape of the results of all ballots recorded by the machine.
